I have 2 preparation days around my homestead….Friday, of course–for Shabbat, but also Sunday for the new week! I go over our Homeschool lesson plans, gather any supplies I’ll need, etc. I also get into the kitchen and prep ahead anything I can for the upcoming weeks menus!
This includes chopping veggies, grating cheeses, baking, making up a freezer meal or two if that fits in (sometimes I just do that during the week when I am cooking, I double or triple up batches and put them in the freezer for later) it can also include canning; really whatever fits the needs of the family, menu and time for the upcoming week or so!
It’s nice to have fresh baked bread at the ready in the freezer; I bake up a few loaves and when it’s cooled I’ll wrap and put up in the freezer. A wonderful help for those days when I can’t make fresh; and by putting it up as soon as it’s cooled…it’s just about as tasty as fresh, too!
I also try and chop up my veggies I’ll need for the week; for me– getting all this done ahead makes meal prep MUCH smoother and less work on the dishwashers!
I also try to grate and slice my cheeses for the week, too! This is so great for quick lunches, like tacos or when we do up salads or enchiladas during the week; so easy to grab this bag of already grated cheese and proceed with dinner! Cheese slices are great to pair up with apples or crackers for snacks or on sandwiches!
This particular day I also browned up a few pounds of hamburger too– for tacos during the week and a spaghetti dinner, and put some taco meat into the freezer too for next week.
Preparing ahead really saves me time (cooking, chopping, grating, baking at once vs many times over the course of a week or more) and money as I (well… my daughters, who’ve taken over dishwashing!) am washing less dishes, and I am prepped ahead for meals and healthy snacks during our busy weeks! I also find it more enjoyable to spend a day prepping in the kitchen in a more relaxed fashion, instead of stressed out trying to get it all done during the week.
Have a great week!
