I am very excited to be a part of the Philosophy Adventure Launch Team! “Philosophy” is one of those subjects that generally sends believing Homeschool Mamas running in the opposite direction muttering words such as ‘liberal’ and ‘unbiblical’ while shaking their heads! Homeschool Mamas take courage, Philosophy Adventure is here!
Today the Homeschool Adventure Co. has released Philosophy Adventure: Pre-Socrates and as part of the launch team, I have gotten a sneak peek at an advance copy!
Philosophy Adventure is a course geared toward students in 6th – 12th grades. It helps students “cultivate and defend a Biblical worldview by teaching them to write skillfully, think critically, and speak articulately” all while exploring the history of philosophy.
Each chapter in Philosophy Adventure includes the philosopher’s story, ‘write, think and speak’ articles & assignments, geographical information (beautiful maps!), examines the ‘school of thought’ that the philosopher founded or participated in, as well as (my favorite) the “Contrast” section that examines source materials from the philosopher and explores them to see if they align with a biblical worldview.
When the curriculum is used in full, high school students can receive up to .5 credits in each of the following areas:
- English Composition
- World History/Geography
- Speech/Communications
- Logic/Critical Thinking
Philosophers studied are Thales, Pythagoras, Xenophanes, Heraclitus, Parmenides, Empedocles, Protagoras, and Democritus. The final sections of the Philosophy Adventure Reader include writing checklists and creative writing prompts.
Philosophy Adventure also comes with a Student Workbook and Teacher Resources. The student workbook contains worksheets and questions to help complete assignments from the main book, and the teacher resources include teacher helps, memory cards, maps, and answer keys.
Philosophy Adventure is available in several different forms at different price points.
- Printed reader and student workbook with resources CD – $89.95
- Printed reader with digital student workbook and resources CD – $69.95
- Digital edition of reader and all resources on CD – $49.95
- Digital download edition – $39.95
If you’d like to view a sample .PDF chapter, click here. I have really enjoyed Philosophy Adventure, I love how it is organized, color coded and how each chapter follows the same format. I have to say, I’ve learned quite a lot, myself– I am stoked to weave this into our curriculum! Come back for my full review in August, but for now………drumroll…………………………………
