Spring is here. Finally!
Birds are singing. Grass is getting neon green. Laundry out on the line again. We have a beautiful sunny day, then pouring rain for a few days. Repeat. We saw our first butterfly a couple days ago and it won’t be long and we’ll have lots of butterflies around–and we want them to stay, so we can enjoy them! So we make up some simple sugar syrup aka “Butterfly Nectar” and tempt them to hang out a little while longer.
One of the blessings of living where we do, is the abundance of wildlife of every size–but the birds and butterflies show up in droves and we love to watch them! Here is the perfect solution (pun intended) to keep them coming back 🙂
- 4 cups of water
- 1 cup granulated white sugar
Add the sugar to the water in a medium sauce pan. Heat the mixture, stirring until the sugar has dissolved.
Cool before filling your butterfly feeder, and store any remaining nectar in the refrigerator for up to a week. Clean your feeder with hot water between fillings and change the nectar at least once a week. DO NOT use honey, syrup or any other kind of sweetener.
It seems to me the true joys in life come from the simple things. Take a few minutes, go sit and watch the butterflies. Happy Spring–enjoy each moment!
