One of my absolute favorite, homemade natural concoctions is Body Butter. Ridiculously simple to put together and you (almost) feel guilty that it is so inexpensive to make—but feels incredibly rich and high-end. I have seen fancy creams, gels, lotions & potions that can fetch into the hundreds of dollars; chock full of chemicals, toxins and who knows what!? Yet I can make up a batch of my homemade recipe, that will last me the better part of a year… for just a few dollars. Not to mention it’s good for the skin, full of clean ingredients and it’s kosher.
Folks, we have a Winner!
Let’s make up a batch! You’ll need just 3 ingredients:
Shea Butter is the queen of seed oils! Most seed oils are categorized into 2 different camps; those that are saponifiable (the most moisturizing properties) and nonsaponifiable (those that have the most healing properties). The unique thing about Shea Butter is that it contains the best of both! No wonder the shea tree, which is technically called the Karite Tree, means Tree of Life.
Shea Butter is known for healing dry skin, rashes, peeling skin, blemishes, wrinkles, sunburn, tough / rough skin, eczema, insect bites, stretch mark preventative, skin damage and just all around excellent skin cream. I use this as a facial moisturizer, especially around the eye area. It is a fantastic stand alone!
Cocoa Butter (aka theobroma oil) is super hydrating to the skin, not to mention has a heavenly light chocolate scent to it! Cocoa butter comes from the cocoa bean, the extracted, meltable oil of the cocoa bean, to be exact. Cocoa Butter has a ton of fantastic properties to it including anti-aging, prevents dryness, soothing to burns, healing to skin and did I mention it smells amazing? It smells AH-mazing!
Coconut Oil is used in sooo many things from cooking, to coffee creamer to beauty products and with good reason! Coconut oil is antibacterial and antifungal, smells wonderful and makes our skin look radiant! Coconut oil is full of saturated fats that help our skin lock in moisture and give our skin a healthy glow. Coconut oil is excellent for sunburn relief, moisturizer, shaving gel, massage oil, the base of lip balms and a ton of natural DIY beauty products!
Gather your butters and oil, a stainless steel bowl (or double boiler) a wooden spoon, your hand mixer and some mason jars/lids (or whatever you prefer to store your Body Butter in) and let’s go! The actual hands on time involved here is minutes, however you’ll have to be patient during the melting and cooling process. I look for words like ‘organic’ and ‘raw’ when hunting down the best product and price. I love Bramble Berry’s oils and butters; but you can find fantastic Shea Butter at Amazon (what DON’T they carry?!) as well as Coconut Oil and Cocoa Butter!
I rough measure 1 Cup of Coconut Oil, 1 Cup of Cocoa Butter and 2 Cups of Shea Butter. Put your ingredients in a double boiler on the stove; or you can do what works for me and put it all into a stainless bowl directly on the warming plate of the wood cookstove. Let it melt down slowly, stirring gently.
Once all the oil and butters have completely melted down, give them a good stir and remove from heat. I let my bowl sit on a thick towel or potholder, where it can’t be disturbed or spilled; and cool to room temp or thereabouts. I then take the bowl and move it to the refrigerator for about 2 hours ( I set my timer for about 90 minutes and check on it). We want it to thicken up and just barely begin to solidify; then remove from the fridge and set back on the counter. Grab your hand mixer and whip, to a ‘frosting like’ consistency. I like to store mine in pint or half pint, wide mouth canning jars in a cool area.
This Body Butter makes a fantastic gift– (you could get creative with custom lids, in colors or designs and labels! think: baby shower, hostess, bridesmaids— ‘just because’– you name it!)–! I love to make things with my own hands. Not only is this a wonderful treat for ourselves, our family; it is healthier and cheaper than anything we’ll find on the store shelves !
And…BONUS(!), we made it ourselves. (just don’t tell anyone how simple it is…)
