If you’ve been hanging around Homestead Originals for any length of time over the past 10+ years; you know I am a huge advocate for mixing up homemade cleaners. They are simple to make, pennies on the dollar vs their commerical/chemical counterparts and a no-brainer in the comparison of ingredients.
When I say ‘simple to make’, I mean it. It takes me longer to find my car keys that it does for me to whip up a batch of homemade cleaning concoctions that will last me months. (and YES, I do know exactly where my car keys are) With a base of usually: water, vinegar, salt or baking soda and some drops of essential oils…”pennies on the dollar” is not a stretch, it’s a welcome reality! Don’t get me started on comparing ingredients, it’s no contest.
It boils down to our choices.
It’s not a matter of knowing that the store bought cleaners are terrible for us, our families and our environment— we all agree to that. It’s often just a matter of habit. We’re just used to buying the scrubber powders and the blue liquid on our shopping trips. BUT. If we knew how to change this and make our own cleaning products to replace the toxic, commercial ones…would we? Would we put forth the effort required?
The desire to make my own products stemmed from the frugal, self reliant side of me. I wanted simple; homemade; natural. Remember the definition of simple is NOT ‘easier.’ Living “simply” in our times, means making a deliberate choice to differ from the mainstream of today’s societal norm.
Years ago, my desire changed over to sheer determination, when one of my children was diagnosed with allergies, chemical sensitivities, and asthma. After much study and research, we were determined that we could not have those products in our home, they are useless (God has provided all we need to make our own) and harmful to everyone. I dove in and started making our own laundry soap, bar soap, counter-top and glass cleaner—all of it.
I’ll spare you all the studies and stats of how potentially terrible commercial cleaners are for us, our children, and our environment. (You can easily find tons of this information on the Internet.) They can cause a myriad of cancers; liver dysfunction; a host of lung and other diseases; they can contribute to the massive influx of ADD/ADHD, asthma, reproductive issues, and all the allergies we now have. Notice how we’ve even chemically anti-bacterialized ourselves to death? Believe it or not some bacteria ARE good for us.
One fact I find extremely interesting is courtesy of the Toronto Indoor Air Commission Study (okay, I’ll quote ONE study). Did you know the home-keeper is approximately 55 percent more likely to develop cancers, over those women working outside the home? Why? We’re exposing ourselves day in and day out (and our families) to all these toxins. We LIVE in them, breathe them, bathe in them; everything we touch has been cleaned by some toxic carcinogen and all of these seep into our systems through our skin, lungs, foods and water.
Fast forward a few years later, and I found a publisher asking to publish my book, Simply Homemade Clean. The irony? It came out as I was being diagnosed with Ovarian Cancer. GULP. The stats aren’t all lollipops and sunshine for those diagnosed with ovarian cancer. They are downright DIM. When I got: diagnosed, surgery that removed parts & pieces that numbered in the double digits, and got the phone call that my cancer was contained and I was ‘cancer free’ — all within the scope of SEVEN DAYS…I was in shock and awe. God saved me. Again.
I really started examining things in our lives even closer. Microscopically closer. I knew that there was more I could do to eliminate risk factors and I was determined to learn as much as I could. God has a plan for me. I was given another shot. I’m darn sure makin’ the best of it!
